Heart Cake Design

My love language is food. If you are loved by me, I likely know your favorite foods. One of baby angel's favorites is strawberry cake and we enjoyed developing this sweet layered cake recipe together.

We wanted the cake to be deceptively simple to put together. And wanted to make people say WOW when they see it. I think we achieved just that.

Valentine's Day brings a great excuse to make a favorite food or two for the special people in your life.

This two layer cake design is especially easy to put together using only 8-inch round cake pans, store-bought cake mix, and frosting. No special cake pan, bags, or piping tips.

Fancy this simple heart cake design up with a few sliced strawberries and a handful of chocolate-dipped strawberries. Your sweeties will feel the love.

Ingredients

  • Cake Mix of your choice--feel free to make a homemade recipe if you prefer
  • Frosting of your choice--tubs of frosting work fine here. Pictured are the ingredients for homemade frosting we chose to use.
  • Food Coloring--if desired
  • Strawberries--for chocolate dipped strawberries and between cake layers and along the bottom, if desired.
  • Dipping Chocolate
ingredients for an easy heart-shaped cake.

How to Make Easy Heart Shaped Cake

  1. In a large bowl, mix the box cake mix following directions on the box.
  2. Bake the cake batter in (2) 8-inch cake pans. Make sure to use baking spray so your cakes release easily from the pans.
  3. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 15 minutes before removing to cooling racks to cool completely. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate to cool.
  4. When cakes are fully cooled, stack the cakes on top of one another to cut the heart pieces out.
  5. To cut the rounded parts for the heart--Using a long serrated knife make slight marks in the top cake dividing it into quarters.
  6. Cut the cake using sawing motions with a serrated knife from the edge of the horizontal line to the edge of the vertical line.
  7. Line the cut piece up on the other side and make the heart top to match.
  8. Place the bottom layer on a cake plate or cake board. Top with a thin layer of frosting and chopped strawberries, if desired.
  9. Place the second layer on top.
  10. Position the top of the heart in place and use frosting to "glue" them in place on the top edges to for the shape of a heart.
  11. Coat the entire cake with a thin layer of frosting, being careful not to go back and forth, especially on the cut edges.
  12. Frost the entire cake covering the cake.
  13. Dip strawberries in melted chocolate and allow to dry.
  14. Slice strawberries of the same size and place slices along the base of the frosted cake.
  15. Place dried chocolate dipped strawberries along the top of the cake and along the base, as desired.
  16. Serve immediately.

Top Tips

Chill your cake--Chilled cake is easier to handle for cutting, frosting, and stacking.

Use baking spray to coat your cake pans. It ensures your cakes will come out of the pans in perfect condition.

Put your cake on a cake stand to elevate it and make it look important and impressive.

Substitutions and Variations

Use any cake, filling, and frosting combination you like! A few that we love:

  • Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting--dip the strawberries in white or pink dipping chocolate so they stand out on top of the dark frosting.
  • Chocolate Cake with Fluffy 7-minute Frosting--I love that marshmallowy frosting. The box frosting is much easier than homemade, in my opinion.
  • Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting--Baby Angel's other favorite cake.
  • White Cakes with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting--Simple flavors that everyone loves. You can even tint the cake pink or blue for a perfect Gender Reveal Cake!

Special Occasion Cakes

This cake is perfect for Valentine's Day, but is also special enough for birthdays and baby showers.

Color a white cake mix pink or blue to use as a gender reveal cake.

Storage

I think this cake tastes the best fresh. Store leftovers covered in the fridge.

I would recommend eating it within 1-2 days as the strawberries lose their quality quickly.
