Old Fashioned Apple and Cherry Crumble

There's something about a fruit crumble that just feels like home. The way warm fruit bubbles up around the edges, the golden topping crisping in the oven, and that smell drifting through the kitchen. Lawdy.

Growing up, I loved visiting the apple orchards in Southwest Missouri then coming home and watching my momma come up with as many uses as possible for those apples.

This apple and cherry crumble is a delicious combination of apples and cherries and is one of those desserts that makes me slow down and savor the simple things.

A little bit rustic, a little bit nostalgic, and a whole lot delicious, this crumble is proof that the best recipes don't need to be complicated.

This simple healthy dessert recipe can be whipped up for a fruit filled weeknight dessert.

Serving the cherry and apple golden crumble.

Ingredients

Apple and Cherry Filling:

  • Baking Apples such as Honey Crisp or Granny Smith. You want an apple that doesn't get mushy when baking.
  • Sour Cherries - I got these beauties from a friend who picks them in her back yard and freezes them. But you can use drained canned cherries (NOT cherry pie filling) or frozen ones.

Crumble Topping:

  • Brown Sugar
  • Old Fashioned Oats - in a pinch, you can use quick oats
  • All Purpose Flour - Thickens the fruit juices
  • Kosher Salt
  • Cinnamon - brings a warm flavor to the crumble.
  • Cold Butter - Cut into small cubes
  • Pecans or Walnuts, optional

Substitutions & Variations

  • Apples and Cherries: Use any fruit combination you like -- Pears, peaches, cherries, blueberries, blackberries, gooseberries, rhubarb, etc all make great combinations.
  • Flour: Swap all-purpose with whole wheat for a nuttier flavor, or use a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend.
  • Oats: Use quick oats for a finer texture, or leave them out entirely for a more shortbread-style crumble.
  • Sugar: Switch brown sugar for white sugar, coconut sugar, or even maple sugar for a different sweetness.
  • Butter: Margarine or coconut oil works in place of butter (though butter gives the best flavor).

Top Tip

Got fruit that's past its prime? Toss it in! This crumble loves a mix-apples, cherries, berries, peaches. Helps to avoid food waste and save money.

FAQ

Can I use other fruits in this crumble recipe?

Absolutely! Use any fruits you have on hand. I've never met a mix I didn't like.

Can I make Fruit Crumble ahead of time?

Sure can! Just assemble it ahead, cover and refrigerate it. Bake just before serving. Make sure to toss a little lemon juice in with the apples to prevent them from browning before assembling.
