A comforting dessert made with simple ingredients. Creamy Rice Pudding with Sweetened Condensed Milk is like a warm hug in a bowl.

Rice Pudding with Condensed Milk
My love for rice pudding goes way back to the days of Elementary School where the lunch ladies made large pots of the stuff.
Those lunch ladies were so nice. They offered it to us kids with or without raisins and they let us sprinkle on our own cinnamon.
God love lunch ladies. This classic treat was magic from the stove top.

Seriously, I loved this creamy dessert as a kid. As an adult, I kind of forgot about rice pudding. My life has been incomplete. Until I started making this easy recipe.
Adding Sweetened Condensed Milk to Rice Pudding
Do you have a can of sweetened condensed milk in the pantry that needs a purpose? Let its existence be your sign to make this Rice Pudding with Sweetened Condensed Milk.
The ubiquitous can of sweetened condensed milk can turn a classic rice pudding recipe into something even more spectacular: Mexican Arroz Con Leche.
Sweetened condensed milk brings an unrivaled creaminess and a sweet, milky flavor to rice pudding.
As a self-professed lover of rice pudding. I have to say, this lowly canned milk with sugar makes a delicious dessert using minimal ingredients.
Tell me I'm wrong after you make it, but I swear it puts me in the mind of the first time I ever had homemade Horchata. Life-changing.
The perfect comfort food for my sweet tooth.
Top Tips
- My favorite rice to use for rice pudding is long-grain white rice. It has the starch needed to make a creamy rice pudding.
- To keep rice pudding from burning and sticking be sure to stir constantly after adding the sweetened condensed milk and use a thick-bottomed saucepan.
- Use leftover cooked white rice to make delicious rice pudding even easier.
Ingredients
- Water - Follow the directions on your rice for amounts.
- Long Grain White Rice - or use basmati rice, brown rice, Jasmine rice, etc. If using instant rice, your initial cook time will reduce according to the package. Or if you have leftover rice, turn it into a delicious dessert.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk - NOT evaporated milk. This one has been sweetened with sugar
- Kosher Salt - helps to balance the sweetness
- Whole Milk - feel free to use milk alternatives such as coconut milk, almond milk, etc.
- Egg, beaten - thickens and brings richness. But be sure to follow the directions so you don't scramble the egg
- Vanilla Extract - brings warm flavor
- Butter - brings a nice creaminess and texture
- Golden Raisins - Regular raisins, dried cranberries, or any dried fruit you like are also tasty
- Ground Cinnamon and/or Nutmeg - brings a warm flavor
- Optional Stir-Ins - cocoa powder, chocolate chips, pecans, fresh fruit, etc.

How to Make Rice Pudding with Sweetened Condensed Milk
Cook your favorite rice in a heavy bottomed pot with a tight fitting lid.
When rice is tender and all the water has been absorbed, add the sweetened condensed milk, salt, and raisins. Cook and stir over medium heat until thick and creamy. Be sure to stir constantly to keep it from scotching.
In a small bowl, add beaten egg to the whole milk.
Remove the pot of rice from heat and stir in the egg/milk mixture.
Then return to cook on medium-low heat for 2 minutes more until thickened to your liking. Add a splash of milk if it gets too thick.
Add vanilla, butter, and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg to taste.
I like to serve in little individual bowls warm. The individual servings makes a simple dessert seem even more special.
