Avocado Toast with Cream Cheese

Avocado toast is good.

But avocado toast with cream cheese and crunchy chili onion oil is the kind of breakfast that makes you pause mid-bite and appreciate yourself.

The cream cheese creates a rich creamy layer that melts into the hot toast. The avocado adds that buttery smoothness. Then the chili onion crunch shows up with garlic, heat, and crispy bits.

If you follow us regularly, you know I share with you Midwest comfort food that's made practical for real kitchens. So, I love a quick, but elevated breakfast like this.

But truthfully, this toast doesn't just show up on busy mornings. It's also a favorite for lazy brunches and occasionally as a midnight snack when the sourdough loaf is still sitting on the counter.

Top Tip

If the toast bends when you lift it, it wasn't toasted enough. Avocado toast needs a sturdy foundation or the toppings will slide around like they're on an ice rink.

FAQ

How to tell if an avocado is ripe?

A perfectly ripe avocado should feel like the end of your nose when it's squeezed gently. If it's soft, it's too ripe therefore don't buy it. If it's hard, keep it on the countertop for a day or two to ripen.

How should I store avocados?

Store a ripe avocado in the refrigerator if you plan to eat it in a day or two to prevent the fruit from becoming overripe or spoiled. If it's still hard, store on the countertop to ripen.

This toast is easy enough for a weekday breakfast on the run but is beautiful enough to serve for special occasions.

Thanks for this recipe, it is delicious and provided new uses for TJ's Crunchy Chili Onion oil and the Everything Bagle seasoning. All too often I purchase these kinds of ingredients and they remain seldom used. I appreciate your creativeness and providing uses for my impulse buys. Any other suggestions for these seasonings?

    1. I can totally relate to your buying habits. 🙂 I love the crunchy chili onion on all kinds of things. One thing that comes to mind right away is potstickers and gnocchi. Or pizza, scrambled eggs, tacos, egg rolls, hummus, burritos, omelets, stir fry... The bagel seasoning is also delish. I love it on bagels or toast with cream cheese, popcorn, guacamole, eggs, hummus (my fav), salad topping, homemade croutons, etc

I made the avocado toast as appetizers. They were very good but I made too many. I used the whole loaf of sour dough bread and cut each slice into six pieces. I still had half of them left at the end of my party. They are really filling and think only one or two were eaten per person. I didn’t have the chili so I used balsamic glaze. It was good but I think the chili crunch would be better. I probably won’t make appetizers again, but will make as an open face sandwich for breakfast or lunch. Toasting the whole loaf of bread didn’t go well for me, either. Will probably try it on a toasted bagel. They were pretty simple to put together and I had never used the everything bagel seasoning, before, and I really like it.

    1. Linda, I'm so happy that you tried the recipe and made it your own! I've been eating it on bagels with a soft boiled egg all week because I've been too busy to make sourdough! Tasty idea!!
