Honey Butter Toast Recipe

How have I not known about Caramelized Honey Butter Toast? Ya'll! It is so good. One of the first breakfasts I ever made on my own was Cinnamon Toast. If only I had known about this!

Who knew baking a sweet, tender thick slice of brioche bread, slathered with a mixture of honey, brown sugar, butter, and a pinch of salt in the oven until the toast caramelized would be so dang good?

TikTok got this one right.

French toast, pancakes, waffles - move over. Delicious Caramelized Honey Butter Toast is taking your place.

Ingredients for Caramelized Honey Butter Toast

Simple ingredients, a baking tray, and an oven yields some pretty dang special toast.

  • Brioche Bread, thickly sliced - this dense sweet bread holds up well to the buttery honey coating. If you have access to Japanese Milk Bread, go with this original recipe ingredient.
  • Light Brown Sugar - adds warm sweetness and caramelizes nicely
  • Butter, softened - salted or unsalted butter works here and provides the fat needed for caramel to happen
  • Honey - brings a depth of flavor, you will be glad it's in there
  • Kosher Salt - highlights the sweetness
  • Cinnamon, Optional - I think a dash of cinnamon would be delightful in this toast. Mix it in the honey/butter mixture.

How to Make Caramelized Honey Butter Toast

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet or frying pan with parchment paper.
  2. Slice brioche bread into thick slices and cut off crusts.
  3. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and soft butter until well combined. Stir in honey and a pinch of salt.
  4. Using a butter knife or offset spatula, spread the butter mixture evenly on both sides of each piece of bread.
  5. Place the coated bread slices on parchment paper and bake for 14-16 minutes. Turn and cook for another 4-5 minutes or until both sides are caramelized and golden brown. Watch closely, as caramel burns quickly.
  6. Allow to cool on a cooling rack for 10 minutes before eating.

Hint: Slice the brioche bread just over 1 inch thick for best results.

Serving Honey Toast

I suppose the idea is to eat this crunchy sweet toast for breakfast, but if I come over to your house, I won't be mad if this is our dessert.

It's delicious all on its own. But if you want to fancy it up...

Cut into cute little triangles served with a scoop of ice cream, drizzled with caramel and chocolate syrup... Yum!

Substitutions and Variations for Caramelized Honey Butter Toast

  • Light Brown Sugar - substitute white sugar for brown if needed. It will still caramelize just fine.
  • Cinnamon - Add a little warm spice to your Honey Butter Toast by adding a touch of cinnamon to the butter/honey mixture.
  • Dessert Toast Sundae - Scoop your favorite ice cream into a bowl, and add your fav ice cream syrup(s), and nuts. Cut the Honey Butter Toast into sweet triangles for a fancy homemade sundae dessert.
  • Air Fryer Honey Butter Toast - Use your Air Fryer instead of the oven following the same directions. I find that my Air Fryer cooks a little faster so watch closely.

Storage

Best served after 10 minutes of cooling. Only make what will be eaten quickly. Luckily, it's a cinch to put together and bake.

Top Tips

Use the parchment paper or it will burn onto your pan and you will be soaking and scrubbing for the next 6 months. Note that parchment paper is oven-safe. Wax paper is NOT oven-safe.

The type of bread does matter. Use a dense sweet bread such as Brioche, cut thick.

Seriously the best toast. I was recently in London and bought a piece of “honey toast” while I was walking around. Layer I wished I’d bought 3 more slices. This is so dang close so it takes me back to Notting Hill each time I make it. Yum! The pinch of salt is key. Thank you!!
