Lemon Blueberry Sugar Cookies where sweet blueberries and tangy lemon come together in a soft, flavorful frosted cookie.
Lemon Blueberry Sugar Cookie Recipe
Chocolate desserts are delicious and the kids all love a good peanut butter and chocolate combination.
But none of the kids ever requested lemon desserts. I'm used to be kind of mad about it, honestly.
But now that they are mostly grown-ups, I get to pick the desserts on regular days.
Which means I get to make delicious lemon desserts like Lemon Jello Cake and blueberry ones like Blueberry Banana Bread. Thank goodness those pesky chocolate-eating kids are cooking for themselves these days. 😉
Chewy Lemon Blueberry Cookies though, y'all... If these lemon sugar cookies don't speak to your tummy, I don't know what would.
This Lemon Blueberry Sugar Cookie Recipe with fresh blueberries rolled up in a sweet/tart lemon cookie dough and topped with a creamy lemon frosting makes my tastebuds happy. I betcha you will agree.

Note: See the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
Lemon Blueberry Cookie Dough Ingredients
- Butter, softened - is the fat base for these cookies and brings richness
- Granulated Sugar - for sweetness
- Eggs - large farm eggs are ideal
- Fresh Lemon Juice - fresh squeezed has the best lemon flavor
- Lemon Zest - the oils in the zest (that's only the bright yellow part) release lots of fresh lemon flavor
- All Purpose Flour - brings the cookies into a dough
- Baking Powder - the cookies leavening agent to make them rise
- Salt - enhances and rounds out the sweetness
- Almond Extract - gives another layer of flavor and enhances the lemon. Vanilla extract can be substituted.
- Fresh Blueberries - frozen blueberries won't make pretty cookies in this light colored dough
Lemon Frosting Ingredients
- Butter, softened - more rich butter flavor
- Powdered Sugar - fine textured sugar to make smooth frosting
- Salt - just a pinch to balance the sweet frosting out
- Lemon Juice - carries the lemon flavor to the frosting, too
- Fresh Blueberries, optional for garnish
How to Make Lemon Blueberry Sugar Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment or a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs, lemon juice, and lemon zest and mix just until combined.
- Add the dry ingredients including flour, baking powder, salt, and almond extract. Mix just until flour is combined.
- Gently fold in fresh blueberries being careful not to smash the berries.
- Using a large cookie scoop, scoop the cookie dough balls onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet giving plenty of room for each cookie.
- Dip the bottom of a glass into sugar and use it to flatten cookie dough balls.
- Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the bottoms are light golden brown.
- Allow cookies to cool on the pan for 1-2 minutes before moving them to a wire rack. Allow cookies to cool completely before frosting them.
- To make the frosting: In a small bowl, stir softened butter, powdered sugar, and a pinch of salt until well combined. Add the lemon juice and stir until smooth. Adjust the thickness of your frosting by adding more powdered sugar if it's too thin or a little bit of lemon juice if it's too thick.
- Frost cookies and top with a blueberry for garnish, if desired.
Top Tips
Check your baking powder expiration date to ensure it will work as a leavening agent, as expected. If it's expired, buy a new can.
Be careful not to smash the juicy blueberries when stirring into the cookie batter or scooping with a cookie scoop.
Double the frosting recipe if you like lots of frosting.
Use room temperature butter in the cookies and frosting for best results.

FAQ
Frozen blueberries tend to "bleed" during mixing and baking making these cookies a bit unattractive. Stick with fresh blueberries for this one.
Be sure to preheat your oven for 15 minutes or so before baking. You can check to be sure your oven is baking at the proper temperature by testing it with an oven thermometer.
Also, make sure your cookie sheet is completely cool before placing your balls of dough.
Make sure you carefully measure your flour. I never weigh my flour when cooking, but I am very careful to stir, scoop carefully, and never tap my flour.
Make sure your baking soda is fresh. Each container has an expiration date on it, you better check yours.
If your baking soda is expired, use it for cleaning or to freshen your fridge, but do NOT use if for baking.
Equipment
Cookie Sheets are so handy to have around. You need at least 2 so you can alternate them and allow them to cool between batches.
Cooking Racks are important so your cookies cool without sticking together or to the plate/countertop.
Cookie Scoops make it easy to scoop your dough and keep all the cookies similar in size so they cook evenly.
