Apple and Blackberry Crumble is the perfect fruit dessert with juicy fruit bubbling under a golden, buttery topping - sweet, tart, and cozy.

Easy Apple and Blackberry Crumble

Mixed fruit desserts might just be my favorite way to celebrate each season's bounty.

The combination of full-bodied sliced apples and plump, juicy blackberries gives this easy Apple and Blackberry Crumble a special place on our dessert table whenever we're craving something sweet and fruity.

I love how simple it is-no fancy ingredients, just honest, cozy flavors that let the fruit shine. Whether you're picking berries yourself or scooping them up at the market, this crumble is our go-to for a warm, comforting treat straight from the oven.

This chilled Blueberry Strawberry Pie in a rich crust is another of my favorite old-fashioned fruit desserts.

Ingredients

Apple and Blackberry Filling

  • Apples - tart green Granny Smiths hold up well in this dessert
  • Blackberries - fresh or frozen work well
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Cinnamon
  • Water
  • Lemon Juice - helps keep the apples from browning while you're working to put it together.

Crumble Topping Recipe for Desserts

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Brown Sugar
  • Butter, cut into small cubes
  • Salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice apples. Toss them in lemon juice and 1 Tablespoon of water to prevent browning.
  2. Mix apple slices and blackberries in a 9 inch baking dish.
  3. Add sugar, salt, flour, and cinnamon. Stir well.
  4. Make crumble topping by mixing flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Press the butter cubes into the flour mixture using your fingers or a fork until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in vanilla.
  5. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the fruit mixture.
  6. Bake at 375 degrees F for 40-45 minutes or until the fruit is bubbly and the crumble topping is golden brown.
  7. Serve warm or allow to cool. Top with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.

Hint: Slice the apples using an apple slicer then slice them again for the perfect thickness and ease.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Gluten Free Fruit Crumble - Substitute gluten-free flour for an easy gluten-free fruit dessert
  • Apple Blueberry Crumble - Blueberries are great in combination with apples, as well.
  • Apple Crumble - Use 6-7 apples for an apple only crumble.

Storage

Store leftovers tightly covered in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Top tip

Stir chopped pecans or walnuts into the crumble topping for a flavorful, warm crunch in the crumble.

FAQ

Should you cook apples before putting them in a crumble?

Nope. No need to cook the apples if you slice them pretty thinly.

How do you keep apples from getting mushy in crumble?

Selecting the apple variety that is appropriate for baking is the secret here. Utilize an apple that stands up well to baking such as Granny Smith or Jonathon.

Do I need to cook blackberries before putting in a crumble?

No need to cook blackberries before baking. If you're using frozen, there is no need to thaw them either.
