Almond and Sea Salt Brownies-a heavenly blend of almond & chocolate goodness with a hint of sea salt atop a gooey brownie.

Almond and Sea Salt Brownies

Ok, so I started with the plan of making a simple Almond Brownie with a light sprinkle of sea salt. You know, a simple homemade brownie that gets away from all the chocolate desserts I always make.

But I have no self-control. I just couldn't put these blond brownies in the oven without chocolate chunks.

In evidence of my fudgy chocolate brownies tendency check out Espresso Brownies, which is like regular brownies on steroids.

So, if you really do want a simple recipe for Almond and Sea Salt Brownies, make this recipe. But exercise more self-control than I did and skip the chocolate chunks.

Ingredients for Almond, Chocolate Chunk, and Sea Salt Brownies

It takes just a few simple ingredients stirred together by hand away to create these moist homemade brownies.

  • Butter, soft - Fat is needed for goodies.
  • Brown Sugar - Adds sweetness and warm flavors.
  • White Sugar - Brings the sweet to the game.
  • Almond Butter - I used natural almond butter.
  • Almond Extract - Flavors the dough and helps carry off the almond flavor. Vanilla Extract can be used.
  • Eggs - Use large eggs only. Serves as a binder for the dough.
  • All Purpose Flour - Brings the batter together.
  • Baking Powder - Leavening agent that helps the brownies rise.
  • Cream - Heavy whipping cream brings a bit of fat to the brownies and helps bring the batter together.
  • Almonds, chopped - I chopped whole almonds. I like the texture this brings, but if you want to use almond slices or slivers they work, too.
  • Sea Salt Flakes - The light thin flakes of Maldon Sea Salt Flakes are nice here. They offset the sweetness of the brownie nicely without being too salty.
  • Chocolate Chunks - for those of us who think a dessert isn't complete without chocolate.

Top Tips for Almond Butter Brownies

Avoid over-stirring your batter. I prefer to make these by hand without a hand mixer.

Use sea salt flakes as they are a lighter salt that won't overpower your brownie.

Bake time can vary. I like my brownies chewy so I bake them on the short side of time. If you want them to be more set up and firm, bake them longer.

Check your baking powder expiration date to ensure it will work as a leavening agent, as expected. If it's expired, buy a new can.

Use room temperature butter and almond butter in the brownies for best results.

FAQ

How do I make my brownies fudgy?

Simply replace half of the butter with canola or vegetable oil for fudgier brownies.

How do I tell if my brownies are fudgy or undercooked?

To test for doneness with a toothpick, insert a toothpick into the center of the brownies and pull it back out.

For fudgy brownies, look for moist crumbs on the toothpick when you pull it out. If brownie batter comes out on our toothpick it will need to bake a bit longer.

How long should brownies set before cutting them?

Allow them to cool completely, 2 to 3 hours, for the prettiest brownie cuts.

How do you cut brownies cleanly?

To avoid having a craggy-looking brownie edge let them cool completely and use a plastic knife to cut them. Edges will be smooth.

What kind of pan is best to cook brownies in?

I like using a shiny metal pan for cooking brownies to prevent the edges from cooking faster than the center which often happens in dark metal pans. Glass pans often leave the centers uncooked while the edges get overdone.

Serving Almond and Sea Salt Brownies

These chewy brownies are a delicious flavor combination that is perfect for any cookie tray or cookie exchange. They will stand out among all the chocolate and peanut butter desserts.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Use vanilla extract instead of almond extract, if needed or preferred.
  • For a perfect fruity addition, stir in dried cranberries or blueberries to your batter for a fruity pop. I love almonds and berries together.
  • Use semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips or even butterscotch chips for a delicious variation.
  • Almond Brownie Sundaes - Top a square with a scoop of ice cream, a drizzle of melted almond butter, and some chopped almonds.

Storage

Store brownies in an airtight container on the counter for up to one week. But if you have desserts that last a whole week in your house, we are not cut from the same cloth.

These almond and sea salt brownies were soo good! I love almond flavoring in anything, but had never tried it in brownies, I am so glad I did. The sea salt flakes on top are a really nice touch.
