Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, beat soft butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Use your hand mixer or stand mixer with the paddle attachment.
Beat in eggs, but do not over-mix. Just mixt them until combined. Add salt and vanilla to the batter.
Dissolve baking soda in the hot water then add to the batter.
Stir in flour chocolate chips and walnuts.
Drop walnut-sized balls of dough on a baking sheet. Give plenty of space for cookies to cook without touching each other.
Bake in a preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are golden brown and set up.
Allow to cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before removing to cooling racks.
